What begins as an auto-fictional account of the narrator s time as a monk and a Marxist revolutionary quickly gives way to something else: what one might call a maximalist iteration of a nouveau roman. Pellucid and beautiful, this novel is a journey through 20th-century Italy that feels more like a rover-ride across the surface of the moon. Indeed, the text is so endlessly metaphysical that the reader might well miss the story of a writer coming into his own, of Moresco discovering his own vision of the world filled with poetry, strangeness, and horror.

Biographical Note

Antonio Moresco was born in Mantua and lives in Milan. Considered one of the founders of contemporary Italian literature, Moresco has created controversy with his critiques of experimentalism, postmodernism, and members of the canon such as Italo Calvino. His novel Distant Light was published by Archipelago in 2013. Clandestinity, his first collection of short stories, was published by Deep Vellum in 2022.

Max Lawton is a translator, novelist, and musician. He has translated many books by Vladimir Sorokin, including Blue Lard (NYRB Classics), Their Four Hearts, and Dispatches from the District Committee (both from Dalkey Archive Press).
